Root Canals Q & A
What is a root canal?
Root canal treatment, or endodontic treatment, is a technologically advanced procedure to remove damaged or diseased pulp from your tooth.
The pulp is the soft tissue inside your tooth. When it’s damaged or infected, it swells within a confined space, causing a great deal of pressure and pain.
A root canal treatment has the benefit of preserving your natural tooth rather than extracting it.
What are the symptoms of a damaged or infected tooth?
Some of the indications that your tooth might have damaged or infected pulp include:
- Toothache or severe pain in your tooth (throbbing pain)
- A discoloured or dark tooth
- A bad taste in your mouth that won’t go away
- A small pimple-like spot above / below your tooth or a visible abscess / swelling.
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule a visit with Hoxton Dental immediately to evaluate whether you need a root canal treatment.
Is it dangerous to avoid a root canal?
When you don’t treat a damaged or infected tooth, it simply gets worse. You might develop an abscess and the infection can spread deeper within your tooth, eventually leaving the tooth to decay entirely and fall out.
The infection can also spread to other teeth in your mouth, as well as your jawbone and even your bloodstream, causing sepsis.
Movies and TV shows make root canals seem like the scariest procedure at the dentist’s office, but in reality, they’re really no more painful or uncomfortable than a filling.
If you suspect you need a root canal, don’t delay getting treatment. Schedule a visit with Hoxton Dental immediately.
What happens during a root canal?
First, your dentist uses a local anaesthetic to numb your tooth and the nearby tissues. Then, they protect the rest of your teeth and mouth with a rubber dental dam.
Once you’re numb, they drill a small hole in the top of your tooth to access the diseased pulp within. They use a series of small files, called endodontic files, to safely and gently extract your pulp.
After they remove all of the decayed pulp, they clean your tooth, sterilize it, and fill it with a natural rubber compound called gutta percha. They use a filling to seal the access hole in the top of your tooth, then reinforce the strength and structural integrity of your tooth with a dental crown.
To get started with your root canal, schedule a consultation at Hoxton Dental today by calling the office or booking a visit online.

Invisalign Q & A
What is Invisalign?
Using digital CAD/CAM computer imaging technology, your dentist can map out how your teeth can look. They create a series of removable aligners and every 1-2 weeks, you switch to the next set of aligners. The aligners continue to push and pull your teeth into a more ideal alignment.
While you still need to come into Hoxton Dental for occasional checkups, you won’t have to worry about regular adjustments, as with traditional braces.
Instead, you simply start wearing your next set of aligners as recommended. This helps you straighten your teeth without taking up too much of your valuable time.
Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?
Hoxton Dental is dedicated to providing comprehensive evaluations to ensure Invisalign is right for you and to personalize every detail of your Invisalign plan.
You may be a good candidate for Invisalign if you have:
- Overbite, open bite or crossbite issues
- Mild to moderate misalignment
- Overlapping or crowded teeth
The dentists at Hoxton Dental have advanced training in Invisalign treatments and regularly participate in many hours of postgraduate study pertaining to orthodontics and invisible braces.
Needless to say, you can feel confident that you’ll get the smile results you deserve with your Invisalign plan.
When will I see results with Invisalign?
Hoxton Dental tailors your Invisalign treatment to your unique smile needs. As long as you’re diligent about wearing your aligners at least 20-22 hours daily, you should start noticing improvements in your smile within just a few weeks.
For minor smile imperfections, your Invisalign treatment plan from Hoxton Dental may take as little as 6 months. More complex Invisalign packages are also fast, with results in just 12-18 months.

Veneers Q & A
What are veneers?
Veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available. Patients love how radically they transform their smile with such a quick and minimally invasive procedure.
What materials are used to make veneers?
Porcelain or composite resin is usually what makes up your veneers. Both materials interact with light similarly to your natural tooth enamel and come in a variety of shades that you can choose to match the rest of your smile.
Both of those qualities mean that your veneers look incredibly natural in your mouth, giving you the ability to perfect your smile while making sure that it still looks uniquely yours.
How do veneers improve my smile?
Veneers effectively give you an entirely new smile as far as appearances are concerned. By covering up the entire front-facing portion of your teeth, they can improve a variety of cosmetic defects. Veneers can enhance teeth that are:
- Cracked
- Chipped
- Discoloured
- Worn down
- Too small
- Widely spaced
- Misshapen
- Crooked
Veneers give you the ability to totally redesign your teeth’s aesthetics, finally giving you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.
What’s involved with getting veneers?
The team at Hoxton Dental use minimally invasive procedures to design your veneers, so preserving as much of your natural tooth tissue as possible.
After you and the team select a size, shape, and colour for your veneers that best enhance your smile and complements your face, the team re-contours some of your tooth enamel to allow space for the veneer material.
Get started with your veneers today by calling Hoxton Dental or scheduling a visit online.

After a consultation, your dentist will schedule subsequent visits that suit you.

Crowns Q & A
Why do I need a crown?
A dental crown, or cap, brings your tooth back to its optimal state. Your dentist may recommend a dental crown if you have a lot of dental decay and a filling just won’t be a good fit. Dentists also provide crowns to:
- Cover a tooth that was treated with a root canal treatment
- Attach a bridge to areas that are missing teeth
- Protect a tooth that is at risk of fracturing
- Correct a tooth that has cracks or chips
- Treat a discoloured or misshapen tooth
- Replace old crowns that are unsightly
Dental crowns are also necessary to cover implants and fully replace a missing tooth.
What are the benefits of a crown?
Crowns are available in many different materials.
Crowns are beneficial because they:
- Prevent teeth shifting
- Help you maintain your natural bite
- Help you have more confidence when you smile
Modern crowns from Hoxton Dental are entirely long-lasting too. While it’s common for crowns to last up to a decade, with good oral hygiene and regular cleanings, your crown can certainly last a lifetime.
Anti Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers
Anti wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers aren’t just ideal for reversing the effects of ageing, although that’s certainly a benefit. These clinical-grade injectables, offered by Hoxton Dental are also used to help with dental and facial pain treatments, as well as for contouring your jawline. Find out if anti wrinkle and dermal filler treatments are right for you by booking a consultation at our practice.
Anti wrinkle injections and Dermal Fillers
How do anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers work?
Anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are ideal for smoothing out your skin and contouring areas of your face. Anti wrinkle injections, in particular, can help relieve all kinds of pain-causing issues. However, each type of injectable works a little differently and so it is always a good idea to speak to a clinician before you decide on any treatment.
Are these treatments permanent?
No, although they are very long lasting. Anti wrinkle injections usually provide anti-ageing or pain-relieving benefits, depending on which areas you had treated, for at least 3-4 months. If you are planning on getting dermal fillers, you can expect optimal results for anywhere from 9-18 months, depending on the brand.
During your dermal filler consultation your clinician will let you know about how long your individual injectables should last. Once they wear off, it is perfectly safe to have your injectable treatment performed again.
Individual results may vary.

Fillings Q & A
What are the benefits of fillings?
Modern fillings are tooth-coloured restorations that fill in areas where decay was or to add support to cracked or broken teeth.
If you do have silver fillings, your dentist can often replace them with modern white fillings. Tooth-coloured fillings are beneficial because they:
- Often require less removal of your tooth’s surface
- Are highly durable
- Are aesthetically pleasing
Fillings also help seal in deep grooves and cracks that can lead to decay if otherwise left untreated.
Is it painful to get a filling?
At Hoxton Dental we pride ourselves on gentle dental techniques, so you can expect an entirely comfortable and virtually pain-free filling procedure.
To help put your mind at ease and minimize any potential discomfort, your dentist will thoroughly numb your treatment area and monitor you throughout your treatment to ensure your comfort throughout.
How do I maintain dental fillings?
Maintaining your dental fillings is just like caring for your natural teeth. It’s important to brush twice a day, in addition to daily flossing.
The team at Hoxton Dental also encourages you to schedule regular routine examinations and hygiene visits throughout the year so that we can prevent any problems.
Book your dental filling evaluation at Hoxton Dental directly through the website or call to schedule by phone with a team member.

Teeth Whitening Q & A
What makes teeth discoloured or dull?
There are a number of reasons why your teeth might become dull or discoloured, including:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Some medications
- Trauma
- Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco
- Eating too many foods with dark pigments, like berries or tomato sauces
- Drinking too many beverages with dark pigments, like coffee or red wine
Your teeth also naturally change colour as you age. The hard outer whiter layer (enamel) wears down and gets thinner over time, while the soft yellower inner layer (dentine) starts to show through.
This can give you a discoloured smile.
How do you whiten my teeth?
At Hoxton Dental, we offer two types of whitening:
At-home whitening:
With at-home whitening, the team at Hoxton Dental will use an impression of your mouth to make you custom-fitted whitening trays. You would then put the whitening solution in the trays and wear them on your teeth for a certain amount of time each day. You’ll have a noticeably whiter smile within just a matter of weeks.
In-office whitening and home whitening
In-office whitening can make your smile shine with a single office visit that takes just over an hour. Your dentist will use special tools to keep your lips, gums, and cheeks protected, then carefully apply the whitening solution to your teeth.
The whitening solution goes to work while you wait in the chair, giving you an instantly improved smile as soon as you leave the office.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
Some whitening products can leave your teeth slightly more sensitive after your treatment but your dentist can help to minimise the discomfort.

At Hoxton Dental the team of dedicated professionals provides top-of-the-line general dentistry services to make sure that your smile stays clean and healthy.
